John C. Cushman III Chairman of the Board
Cushman & Wakefield Inc.
In the beginning of my career, I watched those that were successful in the commercial brokerage profession and worked hard to capture the best-of-class approaches from each and adapt them into my own personal style and approach to the business. I have always been a sponge for information and knowledge, constantly absorbing what was happening in local, regional, national and global markets so I could gain an edge. My objective has always been to have a clearly defined and distinctive competence.
I have throughout my career been committed to the concept that the harder you work, the luckier you get. The work ethic, teamwork, creativity, intellect and an absolute commitment to the best interests of clients have given me a platform to develop relationships that I have been able with pride to maintain for decades. Life is really all about relationships and a fierce sense of loyalty to clients, which has given me the opportunity to work on some of the most exciting office leasing headquarters and capital markets transactions in major cities across America. It is critically important to be an agent of change. I have never been afraid to take a risk, realizing that occasionally things don't work out as you expect, requiring a change in strategy and direction. Ethics matter and character counts.
In a tough market, most important, stay close to your clients. They need your advice and up-to-date information more than ever. There may not be immediate returns on your investment of time and energy, but you will be rewarded in the long run. In a changing market like the one we're experiencing now, you have to adapt by doing more with less and by doing it better. It's a tall order, but it's absolutely essential.
