I think the key to my success has been a strong work ethic, a client-centric approach and principled discipline. My father once told me that you should "never sacrifice your principles to get ahead." I have governed my career by this: I do not cut corners, I am always honest and I live by the "Golden Rule." A little luck along the way never hurts, either.

Surviving a tough market is all about the basics. You have to perform better, faster and smarter when times are tough. There are always deals to do, in boom times as well as bust. The harder you work, the more value you bring to your clients and partners, and the more you are willing to sacrifice will make the difference in ultimate success or failure. Many people look to cut corners during lean times, but I believe just the opposite is necessary-you have to give more and stay disciplined. The true measure of a professional is determined when times are tough-challenging times are an opportunity for greater long-term success. Times like these separate the wheat from the chaff.
