President & CEO
Cushman & Wakefield Inc.
I attribute a lot of the success that I've had to the fact that I always had good mentors, throughout my career. Having people you can trust to help guide you at different stages of your career is invaluable. On top of that, I've personally always placed a lot of value on perseverance. Business can be extremely challenging, even on a day-to-day basis, so having perseverance to keep going and to keep trying-no matter what obstacles the circumstances present you with-has certainly helped me along the way. In addition, I love what I do, and I think that to be successful in any endeavor you need to have a real passion for it. I particularly have always loved the brokerage aspect of commercial real estate and being directly involved in the lifecycle of the deal--everything from interfacing with clients to identifying challenges and opportunities, solving problems and bringing two sides together to get deals done.
In this market, successful professionals will demonstrate courage and leadership in the face of uncertainty. That may include the courage to change your business model if the old one is no longer viable. The courage to make difficult decisions and to take the risks you feel are necessary, even if your instincts are questioned by your colleagues or peers. It's important to recognize that our business is cyclical, and that knowledge should encourage a healthy optimism about the future of our business despite current challenges and uncertainty. Lastly, there are lessons in every downturn, and despite difficulties we may face addressing near-term challenges, in the long run we will have learned a great deal about the mistakes that were made, and our business will be the better for it.
