ESPN SportsCenter | "Umpire"
May 12, 2003
Wieden + Kennedy/New York
In a parody of NFL penalty calls, this funny spot shows an NFL referee conferring with two chefs in the ESPN cafeteria. Walking to the middle of the crowded room, the ref turns on his microphone. Since spaghetti with marinara sauce was served on that day, the originally scheduled next-day special of vegetarian lasagna gets scrapped. "The staff did not feel it was appropriate to have two Italian dishes in a row," he explains. "Therefore, the new special is shepherd's pie ... and lentil soup." Just as well: The Bristol campus is a meat-and-potatoes kind of place anyway.
